São José dos Campos is a Brazilian city in the state of São Paulo. Mesoregion belongs to the Vale do Paraíba Paulista and Microregion São José dos Campos, being located east of the state capital, lying about 94 km from this. It occupies an area of 1099.77 km ², of which 94.064 km ² are the urban and 1005.7 km ² remaining constitute the countryside. In 2011 its population was estimated by the IBGE in 636 876 inhabitants, and in 2010 was the seventh most populous São Paulo and 32 across the country. São José dos Campos was founded in 1767. During the nineteenth century agriculture developed in the city, especially the coffee, mostly from the 1880s. But in the second half of the twentieth century the industry has gained strength, and this time the city discovers his vocation to the area of technology. Today major companies are located, such as Panasonic, Johnson & Johnson, General Motors (GM), Petrobras, Embraer (Headquarters), among others. It has important centers of teaching and research, such as the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology (DCTA), the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), the Institute of Advanced Studies (IEAv), the Institute of Aeronautics and Space (IAE) the Aeronautics Technological Institute (ITA) and the Institute for Research & Development (IR & D), being an important tecnopolo ordnance, site of the largest metallurgical and aerospace complex in Latin America. Besides the economic importance is still an important cultural center of the Paraíba Valley. The Ecological Reserve Augusto Ruschi, the district of St. Francis Xavier and Wetland appear as large areas of environmental preservation, while Santos Dumont Park, City Park and Park Spider Vincentian relevant points visitation located in the urban area, and projects and cultural events held by the Cultural Foundation Cassiano Ricardo (FCCR), the body responsible for designing cultural life joseense.
