Designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, the Cathedral of Our Lady Aparecida, better known as the Metropolitan Cathedral was the first monument to be built in Brasilia, its cornerstone was laid on September 12, 1958.

Its structure was completed in 1960, where it appeared only a circular area of ​​70 meters in diameter, which rise in 16 concrete columns hyperboloid shape, weighing 90 tons, all perfectly calculated by engineer Joaquim Cardozo.

On May 31, 1970, was inaugurated in fact, with the outer transparent glass. In the square access to the temple, are four bronze sculptures to 3 feet tall, representing the evangelists.

Inside the ship, the sculptures of three angels, suspended by steel cables, with the lower 2.22 meters long and 100 pounds, average 3.40 meters and 200 pounds and most with 4.25 meters and 300 pounds. The sculptures are Ceschiatti Alfredo.

The roof of the nave has a stained glass composed of sixteen pieces of fiberglass in shades of blue, green, white and brown inserted between the concrete pillars.

Currently, the cathedral is the parish priest Monsignor Marcony Vinicius Ferreira, born and first priest ordained in Brasilia. Because it is situated on the esplanade of the ministries, the cathedral does not have a community setting - much of the faithful who attend is composed of tourists and faithful who work on the terrace. The cathedral is open daily for tours, except for Mass times.
