The history of House of Culture Mario Quintana opened in July 1980, with the purchase of the old building of the Hotel Majestic at Banrisul.

On December 29, 1982, the state government acquired the Majestic Banrisul, and a year later, the building was listed as heritage, starting from then, its transformation into House of Culture.

In the same year, through Law 7803 of July 8, was named Mario Quintana, becoming part of the then Undersecretary of State for Culture.

The work of physical transformation in the Hotel House of Culture, between project design and construction, developed from 1987 to 1990.

The architectural design was signed by architects Flavio Kiefer and Joel Gorski, who had the challenge of planning 12,000 m2 of built area for the cultural area in 1.540m2 of land. On 25 September 1990 the house was finally opened.

The spaces of the House of Culture Mario Quintana are geared for film, music, visual arts, dance, theater, literature, workshops and events related to culture. They pay homage to greats of the culture of the State of Rio Grande do Sul.
